At-Home Testing FAQs

What if I have a medical emergency while using the home sleep apnea test?
If you are experiencing a medical emergency at any time, including when using a home sleep apnea test, you should call 911 immediately.

The battery provided with the kit is dead. What should I do?
Please call 1-888-505-3534. An HST specialist will be able to walk you through checking if the battery is dead and how to change the battery, if needed.

Are the devices paired correctly?
The HST kit you received has already been paired by the HST specialist prior to shipping. The display on the pulse oximeter will turn on automatically when the probe is placed on your finger. The display will show the bluetooth connection status. If the display is blank, hold down the button on the oximeter for three seconds to activate the oximeter sensor and probe.

Did I start my test correctly?
Press and release the middle button on the face of the Nox T3 device. If the timer is visible and counting, then you have started your test correctly.

Is my pulse-oximeter on properly? Does it matter which hand the probe is on?
Our instruction booklet indicates the use of specific hands or fingers to increase accuracy and comfort during testing. However, if needed, it is possible to obtain accurate oxygen saturation and pulse readings from other fingers or the opposite hand. For detailed information on how to secure the pulse-oximeter and probe correctly, refer to Step 4 in the booklet.

It looks like the HST stopped recording. What should I do?
After 30 seconds of inactivity, the screen of the Nox T3 device will turn off in order to save power. This is normal and does not impact the collection of your sleep data. To check if your HST is still recording, you can press the middle button once to turn on the display. If the HST is recording, the timer should still be counting.

I want to make sure I didn’t accidentally erase my recording or start a new recording.
To start or stop the recording, the middle button must be held down on the T3 for approximately 3 seconds (each time). It’s very unlikely that this will happen accidentally. However, if it does occur, the Nox T3 will retain all recordings until manually erased by our HST specialist. So, all of your recordings should be stored safely on the device for our team to review.

The cannula came off while I was sleeping. Is this okay? How do I know if everything else recorded properly last night?
The Nox T3 device is designed to obtain accurate data, even when the cannula comes off in the middle of the night. Once your test has been reviewed by the FusionSleep® team, it can then be determined if the HST was recorded properly for an accurate diagnosis or if a retest is required. Although there is always a possibility that the data collected is invalid, this doesn’t happen often - even if a piece of equipment doesn’t stay on all night.

I slept worse (or better) during my home sleep test than I typically do. Will my HST still be accurate?
It is possible that your quality of sleep, overall, can vary from night to night. Subjectively, you may feel more or less rested than usual after your test. However, the HST is specifically, and primarily, designed to determine if obstructive sleep apnea is present - not your level of sleepiness. Unless you have had a very atypical night, such as drinking excessive alcohol prior to sleeping (or other factors known to potentially increase the severity of sleep apnea), the variance of severity for sleep apnea from night to night should be minimal. Any additional information should be noted on the included questionnaire.

Something unexpected came up (e.g. I need to go out of town, I have a cold). Should I hold on to my HST?
If an unexpected issue arises and you are unable to complete your HST on the planned appointment date, please contact a FusionSleep® team member at 678.990.3962 - Option 1 to reschedule your test date.

I have a question about my test or results. Who should I call?
You will review the HST results during your follow-up appointment at FusionSleep®’s clinic. If you have not already scheduled your follow-up appointment, please call 678.990.3962 (Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm).

I lost the return shipping envelope. What should I do?
Please call 1-888-505-3534 (Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm). An HST specialist can send you a new envelope or provide additional directions on how to return the HST kit.

What happens if I can’t return the HST the next day?
Once you have completed your test, it’s best to return the entire kit the following day. While the HST kit is in your possession, loss or damage continues to be your responsibility. We allow a period of 7 days (or 5 business days) from your appointment to receive the HST kit back. Please be aware that the fee for lost, damaged or unreturned devices can be up to $3,650. If you are unable to return your HST kit on time, please contact a FusionSleep® team member at 678.990.3962 - Option 1.

Can I Sleep with All These Wires?
This is the most frequently asked question at FusionSleep. The answer is YES. The technologist is a specially trained professional who applies sensors, records sleep data and maximizes your comfort in order to ensure a technically superior study. After you prepare to get comfortable for the night, your technologist will use special adhesives and/or tape to attach the necessary sensors. No needles are ever used.

You will have sensors:

  • applied to your head and behind the ears

  • taped on either side of your eyes and underneath your chin

  • placed on your chest to measure your heart rate

  • placed near your nostrils to measure breathing and snoring patterns

  • placed on your legs to measure movements throughout the night

  • placed on one flinger to measure blood oxygen levels

Your technologist will keep watch throughout the night to maintain the integrity of the data as well as your comfort. Each room is designed with an intercom for easy two-way communication.

What is a Polysomnogram?
A polysomnogram (PSG) is a comprehensive and non-invasive recording of multiple physiologic parameters related to sleep and health. Below are a few terms you might hear related to the sensors that are used.

Sleep Testing also includes other sensors to record:
PSG = Polysomnogram
EEG = Brain Waves
EOG = Eye Movements
EMG = Muscle Activity
ECG = Heart Rate

  • Nasal Airflow and snoring with a nasal cannula

  • Respiratory Movement with soft stretchy bonds over the chest and abdomen

  • Body Position

  • Oxygen Saturation

  • Video Recording of Movements and Behavior

The sensors are connected to a recording device (called a head-box) located on the nightstand with very thin, colorful, plastic-coated wires. The wires are all long enough so you can comfortably change positions during the night.

What do I do in the Morning?
The technologist will wake you between 5:00am and 5:30am, depending on the data obtained, then proceed to removing all sensors. You will be asked to complete a few additional questionnaires relating to your sleep and experience with us at FusionSleep. You are welcome to shower and prepare for the day. Don't forget to pick up a freshly brewed coffee before you leave. Check out is at 6:30am.

What if my Schedule Changes?
One of our sleep technologists has been specifically assigned to work with you on the night of the study. Additionally, your insurance provider may have precertified this study only for this date. Therefore, it is important that you keep your scheduled sleep testing appointment. If you are unable to maintain the appointment date, please call FusionSleep at 678.990.3962 within 48 hours of your appointment. If your study falls on a Saturday or Sunday, please call no later than Thursday. If you anticipate arriving late to the Center on the day of your study, please call to notify the technologists.

When Will My Results be Ready?
After your sleep testing, a specially trained sleep technologist will thoroughly analyze the entire recording. Once completed, our Board Certified Sleep Medicine Physicians will perform a detailed analysis and produce a written interpretation of all testing results with your particular medical information in mind. For this reason, your sleep technologist is not able to give you any information about your testing. We are committed to having your study results available by your next appointment.
