Make Time for Sleep This Holiday Season

How are you coping with the increased tempo of the holiday season? With increased traffic on the road, busy stores, events at home or school, and houses packed with family members, the holidays can leave little time for yourself.

To continue to feel healthy and have the energy needed to enjoy the holiday season, you need to ensure you are obtaining quality sleep.

Busy Schedules, Little Sleep

Do you ever wonder how your schedules fill up so quickly? From time to time, you may feel overwhelmed or overbooked, whether it's busy, end-of-year work deadlines, or holiday parties and plans.

We all have our ways of coping with little to no sleep. To overpower lack of sleep, some of us might up the amount of caffeine consumed. While this provides a short-term boost of energy, it can affect our ability to sleep well throughout the night and create a continuous cycle of daytime sleepiness. Instead of turning to caffeine, make a plan to get healthy sleep at night so you have energy to last you throughout the day.

Finding Your Calm Amidst the Craziness

One way to combat the craziness of the holidays is to find an outlet that calms you down. Make time for yourself this holiday season to stay well-rested and rejuvenated to tackle everything else on your calendar.

1.    Stick to a consistent bedtime schedule

Do you best to keep your bedtime schedule consistent every night and wind down the evening early. Even if you can't get to sleep at your average time with holiday parties and family gatherings, try to maintain a consistent amount of sleep per night.

2.    Don’t overbook your schedule

Practice saying “no.” As hard as it may be to turn down a third festive ugly sweater party in a row, your ZZZ’s will thank you later.

3.    Put your thoughts to ‘bed’ before bedtime

Do you ever experience racing thoughts shortly before bedtime that keep you from falling asleep? Try journaling before bed to help silence those thoughts.

4.    Make time for yourself to unwind

If you find yourself with an extra 15 - 30 minutes of free time during the day, take that time for yourself. The chores and to-dos can most likely wait. Use your time to rest and recharge for your next holiday activity or responsibility.

During your crazy schedule this holiday season, take time to celebrate sleep by practicing healthy sleep habits.
