He received his medical degree (MD) from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio Texas. He completed his internship in general surgery and internal medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon followed by an Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) residency with KaiserPermanente in Oakland, California.

Following his residency, Dr. Pitts spent several years practicing Otolaryngology with Kaiser Permanente in northern and southern California. In 1998, he was selected Chief of Otolaryngology for a brand new medical center in Baldwin Park, California which served a population of 250,000 patients. He continued to serve until 2002 when he and his family relocated to north Georgia and shortly afterwards began his career in Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Pitts is a board certified otolaryngologist (American Board of Otolaryngology). He is a member of the American Academies of Sleep Medicine, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, and Otolaryngologic Allergy, in addition to the American College of Surgeons.
