Can I Sleep with All These Wires?

This is the most frequently asked question at Fusion Sleep. The answer is YES. The technologist is a specially trained professional who applies sensors, records sleep data, and maximizes your comfort in order to ensure a technically superior study. After you prepare to get comfortable for the night, your technologist will use special adhesives and/or tape to attach the necessary sensors. No needles are ever used. You will have sensors:
- applied to your head and behind the ears
- taped on either side of your eyes and underneath your chin
- placed on your chest to measure your heart rate
- placed near your nostrils to measure breathing and snoring patterns
- placed on your legs to measure movements throughout the night
- placed on one finger to measure blood oxygen levels
Your technologist will keep watch throughout the night to maintain the integrity of the data as well as your comfort. Each room is designed with an intercom for easy two-way communication. Your technologist is readily available just a few feet away in the centralized recording room. Our sleep laboratory equipment is designed for mobility, to allow you to shift positions at any time and disconnect from it if you need to use the restroom during the night.
What is a Polysomnogram?
A polysomnogram (PSG) is a comprehensive and non-invasive recording of multiple physiologic parameters related to sleep and health. Below are a few terms you might hear related to the sensors that are used. Sleep Testing also includes other sensors to record:
- Nasal Airflow and snoring with a nasal cannula
- Respiratory Movement with soft stretchy bands over the chest and abdomen
- Body Position
- Oxygen Saturation
- Video Recording of Movements and Behavior
The sensors are connected to a recording device (called a head-box) located on the nightstand with very thin colorful plastic coated wires. The wires are all long enough so you can comfortably change positions during the night.
PSG = Polysomnogram EEG = Brain Waves EOG = Eye Movements EMG = Muscle Activity ECG = Heart Rate
What do I do in the Morning?
You will be woken up by your technologist around 6:00AM. The technologist will assist you by removing the sensors. You will be asked to complete a few additional questionnaires relating to your experience.
You are welcome to shower and prepare for the day in your own private bathroom. You will be provided with coffee and a light snack before you leave the Center.
What if my Schedule Changes?
One of our sleep technologists has been specifically assigned to work with you on the night of the study. Additionally, your insurance provider may have pre-certified this study only for this date. Therefore, it is important that you keep your scheduled sleep testing appointment.
If you are unable to maintain the appointment date, please call Fusion Sleep at 678.990.3962 within 48 hours of your appointment.
If your study falls on a Saturday or Sunday, please call no later than Thursday.
If you anticipate arriving late to the Center on the day of your study, please call to notify the technologists.
When Will My Results be Ready?
After your sleep testing, a specially trained sleep technologist will thoroughly analyze the entire recording. Once completed, our Board Certified Sleep Medicine Physicians will perform a detailed analysis and produce a written interpretation of all testing results with your particular medical information in mind.
For this reason, your sleep technologist is not able to give you any information about your testing. Fusion Sleep does not provide results over the phone in order to maintain privacy regarding your medical information.
We are committed to having your study results available by your next appointment.
