Autobiography

Although sleep has been studied for many years in the field of medicine, we still know so little about this seemingly mysterious state of existence. Our knowledge of the role that sleep plays in the normal development and function of children from infancy to adolescence is growing, yet many fundamental questions remain unanswered. Working in a medical field where discoveries are almost a routine, is both exciting and challenging, because the application of new concepts to patient sleep problems can provide benefits that last a lifetime.

I became interested in sleep medicine as a child neurology resident at the Cleveland Clinic. Who knew the life altering effects that a six-week elective in my final year of residency training would have on my medical career? I was amazed at how sleep not only affects a person's physical health, but also their entire mental well being. Despite the clear importance of sleep, many of the medical professionals I encountered throughout my training, and even in practice, routinely overlooked sleep-related complaints of patients despite otherwise thorough evaluations. Sleep Medicine is a relatively new medical specialty which is not often taught in medical schools, or residency training programs. After realizing this gap in medical education, and the important role that sleep plays in our daily function as well as disease prevention, I decided to formally study Sleep Medicine in a one-year fellowship focusing on both adult and pediatric sleep disorders. Since many sleep disorders develop over a lifetime, and genetic sleep research illustrates this quite vividly, I felt that the basis of my training needed to include the full-spectrum of disease presentation from infancy to advanced age.

As the mother of two young children, I understand the clinical and practical importance of proper sleep for a child. Medical conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, metabolic syndrome, headaches, and even seizures are often the result of sleep-related conditions in children. Academic and social development also is greatly impacted by proper sleep, and early identification of sleep disorders can make all the difference in a child’s success. I empathize with parents who have children with sleep difficulties, since one child’s problems can impact the entire family. My goal is to focus on finding a solution to your child’s sleep problems using my years of training in Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology, and Sleep Medicine.

By joining the Fusion Sleep Program, I know that my skills in Sleep Medicine have found a home in one of the country’s most comprehensive and progressive programs of its kind. Collaboration with some of the countries leading experts in Sleep Medicine makes Fusion Sleep an ideal program for continued professional growth, and a unique venue for expert clinical care. I know that through proper identification of sleep disorders we actually can prevent disease and change the future, one child at a time.
