Blue Light Therapy Helps Treat
Circadian Rhythm Disorders

What the Sun Does for You

There are many strategies for treating specific Circadian Rhythm Disorders (CRDs) and managing the symptoms. Bright light therapy, behavioral therapies and medical interventions all play a part in treating CRDs. In addition, we provide a coordinated approach for treating other sleep and wake disorders associated with CRDs in children, adolescents and adults of all ages.

People have long since realized the importance of light to our overall well-being. We feel revitalized after spending time in the sun and we are less energetic without it. Sunlight actually influences our mood and well-being. Without sunlight we sleep poorly and our circadian rhythms (body clocks) can be shifted (advanced or delayed).

Bright Light Therapy, or Light Box Therapy, uses a light source that provides a specific wavelength and intensity to activate neurons in the Suprachiasmatic nucleus of the brain. Studies have shown this to be an effective therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the “Winter Blues”, as well as for the treatment of sleep disorders and CRDs. Exposure to bright light can improve sleep and vigilance resulting in increased energy and elevated mood.

How does it work ?

  • Keep the Light Box within two feet of your eyes.
  • You should use the light for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Use it daily at the same time, typically in the morning for late risers.
  • The Light Box beam must be directed toward your eyes.
  • Keep your eyes open, but do not stare directly into the light.

Availability

Bright Light Therapy is safe and effective and light boxes are becoming more and more readily available. These products provide the proper intensity, wavelength and bandwidth in a compact and lightweight design. Modern light boxes are small, yet powerful remedies for circadian rhythm disorders.
